Don’t neglect your pet’s dental health, as the mouths of animals are both incredibly important for their health and can also be the site of serious discomfort and disease. We’re happy to provide pet dental services ranging from dental exams and cleanings to diagnosis and treatment of dental disease.
Dental Disease
Dental disease does not begin and end in your pet's mouth. Oral bacteria may travel through your pet's bloodstream to vital bodily systems causing damage to the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. The majority of dogs and cats have some level of dental disease by the time they are 2 or 3 years of age. To give your pet the best prerequisites to a long and healthy life, good dental health plays an integral role.
Bad breath is often the first sign of dental disease. Plaque and tartar accumulation can also lead to:
- Inflamed gums
- Discolored Teeth
- Pain when chewing or playing
Dental Examination
Dental examinations are an important way to stay on top of your pet’s oral health and hygiene. Because pets tend to be protective of their mouths, you may not be aware of an issue without an official exam from a veterinary professional.
Dental exams help us look at your pet’s teeth, mouth, and gumline to identify warning signs of potential issues such as gum disease, and also assess their overall oral health. Based on the results of this exam, we may advise a dental cleaning which will help get rid of buildup of harmful materials.
Don’t neglect your pet’s dental health— after all, both dogs and cats use their mouths to interact with the world, not just for eating and drinking. Soreness in their mouth can lead to a dramatic drop in their overall quality of life, and can be a sign of serious health problems.
Dental Cleaning
Dental cleanings are an effective way to remove buildup of plaque and tartar from your pet’s mouth, teeth, and gums. It’s an important step that may be recommended by one of our vets after a dental exam that finds excess buildup or signs of gum disease.
Pets need to be anesthetized during dental cleanings to avoid pain, discomfort, or stress, and because pets tend to be reluctant to give access to their mouths— particularly to people other than their owners.
At-home Dental Care
As much as we can do to help support oral health for your pet, at-home care is even more important. We'll advise you on the best way to take care of your pet's teeth at home. In some cases, this will include a brushing plan and/or special treats or food that promote oral care.
